FAQ

What is yoga?
Yoga is a total system of health and fitness that originated in India at least 5000 years ago.  The word yoga means "union" and was designed to bring a person's mind, body, and spirit into balance for complete health. This is accomplished through a series of yoga postures, special breathing, relaxation techniques, and meditation. Hatha yoga refers to the physical form of yoga.
Yoga is not a religion. During final relaxation, students are encouraged to keep their mind focused on an image, word or phrase, such as a mantra or a bible verse. This practice stills the restless mind, yet also enables individuals to focus on what is right for them.
How can I get the most benefits out of yoga?
By practicing regularly at least two to three times per week. To see a profound mental and physical change, simply commit yourself to 3 yoga classes or home practices per week for 3 months.
Is yoga for everyone?
What if I'm not flexible or I'm overweight, out of shape or a senior citizen?
The only prerequisite to do yoga is being able to breathe.  Our instructors will show you how each posture can be modified to fit your individual needs.  Yoga is not competitive; we strive to leave our ego at the door, so that we are fully able to enjoy our practice. Each student is encouraged to go at his or her own pace, make modifications as necessary and always listen to their own bodies.
Can yoga help me sleep better?
Yoga will teach you how to relax and enable you to calm your restless mind (what yogis call a “monkey mind”, because it jumps from one thing to the other). Yoga will also help you to release tightness or tension from muscles in your body, thereby allowing you to rest more comfortably.
What should I wear or bring to class?
You can wear anything that is comfortable and allows you to move and stretch.  Many people find that modest exercise wear works fine (no short shorts or big t-shirts) l Yoga classes are done in bare feet, so you can wear any shoes you like.  If you have your own mat, feel free to bring it or you can borrow one of ours. We also have straps, blocks and blankets, but feel free to bring any props that will make your practice more enjoyable.
How do I know which class is right for me?
If you are new to yoga, or have only done yoga without the assistance of a qualified instructor, then Yoga Basics is for you.  Yoga Basics will teach you safe and functional form for basic yoga postures and prepare you to begin to link the poses together into a flow. As you become familiar with the basic yoga postures and are ready to begin linking poses together and coordinating movement with the breath, then you are ready for Yoga Flow 1.  If you have a good understanding of correct body alignment in the basic postures and are ready for more challenging poses, then you are ready for Flow Yoga 2.  Yoga Strength is for all levels.
Anything else I need to know before coming to class?
Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before your first class, as you will need to fill out paperwork and sign a release for insurance purposes. Please do not be late as this disturbs the whole class. Do not eat 1 to 2 hours prior to class, small snacks are fine. Drink plenty of water (we have bottled water for $1). Please leave your valuables at home. Students must be 14 years or older to attend a regular class or workshop. Unfortunately, we do not have child care available, and we cannot watch your children while you attend class.
